Then, we hopped into the van\u00a0and drove to UW Friday Harbor Laboratories. We hustled to the docks, where we met <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu\/whatsnew\/article.cfm?id=2813\">Joe Gaydos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Joe is a wildlife veterinarian, professor at UC Davis, Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seadocsociety.org\">SeaDoc Society<\/a> and co-author of our &#8220;textbook:&#8221;\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/whalemuseum.org\/products\/thesalishseajewelofpacnw\">Salish Sea: Jewel of the Northwest.<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>We received the book as a welcome to the Salish Sea Sciences program.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3659\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/BookCover.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3659\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3659 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/BookCover.jpg\" alt=\"BookCover\" width=\"535\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/BookCover.jpg 535w, https:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/BookCover-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover photo from Whale Museum website; remaining blog page photos by Seth Grant<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Joe\u00a0kindly signed our books\u00a0with individual messages in his office, then we went back down to the docks to look at the harbor seals that were going to be examined.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Our hearts burst when we saw the baby seals and how thin they were, but we felt better when we found out that their death was not in vain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">They were stranded and so a necropsy was performed to find the cause of death. Another thing we learned was that harbor seals have some of the biggest eyes of the entire mammal population when compared to body size . Harbor seals are the biggest population of seals in the entire San Juan area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">We then came back to the dorms and\u00a0collected all our data from previous surveys and compiled them into one spreadsheet to be used for further projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\">Later that day we were excited for our guest that evening, <a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/fishguy\/People\/Adam-Summers-Bio.html\">Adam Summers<\/a>\u2014an expert in biomechanics\u2014because he had a major role for the design of the fish in <em>Finding Dory <\/em>and<em> Finding Nemo.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;
