In so many instances, you simply won&#8217;t\u00a0know how much a college truly will cost until you receive an\u00a0offer. Depending on the school and where it is located, the total cost of attendance (COA) can range widely. For example, for the 2017-2018 school year, <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.wwu.edu\/tuition-expenses\">Western Washington University&#8217;s COA<\/a>\u00a0comes to\u00a0$22,828 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/admission\/afford\/cost-of-attendance\/\">Harvey Mudd College&#8217;s COA is $71, 917<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Before you go into sticker shock, consider that three-quarters of Harvey Mudd students attend with substantial financial support from both college scholarships and grants as well as from\u00a0federal and state government funds. Harvey Mudd&#8217;s\u00a0policy is to meet 100% of a family&#8217;s demonstrated need. The comparison with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.finaid.wwu.edu\/scholarships\/pages\/wwu_scholarships\/freshmen_transfer\/list_fresh_trans.php?type_ID=1&amp;sub_type_ID=3\">Western Washington Scholarships<\/a> is intriguing\u2014a high school student with great grades, scores, and other aptitudes who\u00a0is accepted\u00a0at both schools may not have to make a\u00a0choice on\u00a0financial grounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>FINANCIAL PACKAGE<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Your <em>financial package<\/em> may include one or several of the following:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em>merit scholarships and grants<\/em> (these are gifts and do not need to be repaid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em>need-based scholarships and grants<\/em>\u00a0(these are gifts and do not need to be repaid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em>work-study<\/em> (on-campus jobs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em>loans<\/em>\u00a0(some loans may be interest free, deferred until graduation, and provided by the school, other loans may be offered by\u00a0the government at a low interest rate; expensive private loans are explicitly discouraged)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>100% DEMONSTRATED NEED<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Many colleges and universities are now using this language to convey that they are prepared to make their college a reality for you by meeting you where you are financially.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong><em>There are three primary categories:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">* 100% demonstrated need, regardless of family income \u2014 without loans<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">* 100% demonstrated need for families within a specific income range \u2014 without loans<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">* 100% demonstrated need, but may include\u00a0loans \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Here is a link to a September 2015 list of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.prepscholar.com\/colleges-that-offer-complete-financial-aid\">schools offering 100% demonstrated need by category<\/a>;\u00a0here is an <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.collegegreenlight.com\/blog\/colleges-that-meet-100-of-student-financial-need\/#sthash.EQfLmCPp.a55k12LB.dpbs\">August 2016 list<\/a> (each school listed has a category notation, but the list itself is organized alphabetically)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>EXPECTED FAMILY\u00a0CONTRIBUTION<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Colleges and universities determine &#8220;demonstrated need&#8221; by analyzing the financial data you provide them with the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and\/or CSS (College Scholarship Service) financial aid forms. These forms establish your personal financial profile and therefore determine your expected family\u00a0contribution.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>FAFSA<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/fafsa.ed.gov\/\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)<\/a> functions like a national clearing house for financial aid. Because the FAFSA application involves\u00a0verification of prior year household and income data\u00a0from the IRS, most colleges depend on it\u00a0as a reliable basis to ascertain your expected family contribution. Even if you do not qualify for federal or state financial aid, it is wise to complete the FAFSA. Many colleges use FAFSA information to help determine whether you might qualify for\u00a0other\u00a0cost reductions such\u00a0as grants, scholarships, and work-study.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>CSS<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">The College Board provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/student.collegeboard.org\/css-financial-aid-profile\">College Scholarship Service (CSS)<\/a> that many of the nation&#8217;s most selective colleges and universities also require. Its purpose is to help them determine their allocation of non-government financial\u00a0aid such as the college&#8217;s own grants, scholarships, and loans. The CSS application\u00a0demands more detailed information than the FAFSA, including whether you own a home, and is specific to each college to which you apply. This feature allows college financial aid officers greater\u00a0discretion than is possible with only the FAFSA. There is a small application fee, but some families may qualify for a fee waiver.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>FULL RIDE<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Exceptional high school scholars who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, service or other such qualities have the opportunity to vie for merit scholarships that cover full tuition or even a full-ride (tuition plus other expenses). Here is a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.prepscholar.com\/79-colleges-with-full-ride-scholarships\">2015 list of 79 colleges with full-ride scholarships<\/a>. Check individual colleges for their financial aid policies and opportunities. There are many more than 79 schools offering full-tuition or other significant merit aid\u00a0that celebrates any number of capacities and talents, including the arts and athletics, not just test scores and academics.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>PELL GRANT<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Students with considerable financial need may qualify for a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/types\/grants-scholarships\/pell\">Pell Grant<\/a>\u2014a federally funded grant that does not have to be paid back. The\u00a0maximum award is $5,815 for 2016-2017.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>ESTIMATED NET COST<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Subtracting\u00a0the expected family contribution and financial aid package from the total COA\u00a0reveals your\u00a0estimated net cost. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.college-kickstart.com\/blog\/item\/making-sense-of-financial-aid-packages?category_id=58\">College Kickstart<\/a>\u00a0has published a blog that illustrates by example how to make sense of financial aid packages. She is an excellent student who was accepted by\u00a0all four selective schools. The family&#8217;s household includes two parents and a sibling, the parents have a combined income of $110,000 with\u00a0$50,000 in savings, and the student has no assets. The schools themselves are committed to meeting 100% demonstrated need, but one can afford to do so without loans as well as\u00a0estimate a significantly lower EFC for the family. Your takeaway: read the details of your package carefully. The big difference between Wesleyan and UCLA is that UCLA would cost\u00a0$282 more in cash and $2,000 more in loans, and save\u00a0$50 in\u00a0work-study. With its long history of developing its endowment and other financial resources, Princeton is the least\u00a0expensive option.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>TOOLS:<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">College website financial aid pages<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">College net price calculators (for example, here is the <a href=\"https:\/\/admission.princeton.edu\/financialaid\/estimator\">Princeton U. Estimator<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">FAFSA and CSS websites<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">For FAFSA, you will need a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/fafsa\/filling-out\/fsaid\">FAFSA ID<\/a> and you will want to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/fafsa\/filling-out#financial-info\">IRS Data Retrieval Tool<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Scholarship websites, including national scholarships and those targeting Washington State residents (please consult\u00a0the <em>Spotlight<\/em> focused on scholarships).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">For\u00a0income under $50,000 use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/scholarmatcher.scholarmatch.org\/\">ScholarMatcher<\/a>\u00a0to find colleges that retain and graduate students on time, offer generous financial aid, and provide ample\u00a0student affairs\u00a0services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>TIPS:<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">FAFSA and CSS applications are published on <strong>October 1st<\/strong>; do not wait to complete these.
