They are public or private, liberal arts or pre-professional, 2 year or 4 year, and can have either secular or religious foundations. There is no uniform placement process, admission requirements vary, college rankings diverge considerably, and every college offers unique opportunities for majors, research, internships, travel, and community involvement. Every college seeks students who are a good fit, likely to graduate in 4-years happy and ready for the world.\u00a0This Spotlight focuses on the English Language requirements and application processes unique to international students.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><b><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 20px;\">All colleges require a lot of reading, listening, and writing in English. Math and\u00a0engineering programs demand high language skills too. Students are expected to be able to absorb\u00a0and communicate in English at a high level, fluently\u00a0and quickly. Every college applicant, no matter where they come\u00a0from, needs to demonstrate proficiency in\u00a0academic English.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">International students, just like Americans, can show\u00a0proficiency with SAT\/ACT critical reading and writing test scores. International students\u00a0may also have to pass the TOEFL exam, ideally with a score greater than 95. No 4-year college will accept an international student with a TOEFL score below 79.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Conditional Enrollment\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">With \u00a0a TOEFL\u00a0score of 65, even a 61, a\u00a0student may have the option to\u00a0take a semester or two of intensive English classes and pass a\u00a0test before continuing on with regular classes at the college.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Concurrent Enrollment<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">A few colleges will allow\u00a0students with scores below their TOEFL entry requirement to\u00a0take a few regular classes alongside\u00a0their Intensive English classes. These students\u00a0also will have to pass an English\u00a0proficiency test before they are fully enrolled in regular classes.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">There are many excellent schools that will accept a student for regular 4-year enrollment with a TOEFL of 80\u2014if the student also has\u00a0B or better grades in regular high school courses. <\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>TOEFL Sub-Scores<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Colleges often\u00a0insist that no TOEFL sub-score (listening, reading, and writing) is below a certain\u00a0level\u2014this can be anywhere from 14 to 22. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Very Selective Liberal Arts Colleges<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Harvard, Bates, UCLA and the rest expect international students to have very high TOEFL scores\u2014above 100, preferably closer to 120\u2014as well as high\u00a0SAT\/ACT scores.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><b>US\u00a0COLLEGES: DESIGNED FOR INDIVIDUAL INTERESTS &amp; NEEDS<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/RightFit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4026 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/RightFit.jpg\" alt=\"rightfit\" width=\"680\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/RightFit.jpg 680w, https:\/\/salishseasciences.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/RightFit-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">In the United States, colleges want\u00a0students who are\u00a0&#8220;the right fit.&#8221;\u00a0This means students have to do their part to figure out which of 2500 colleges best fit their\u00a0interests and needs. Three categories\u00a0dominate the admissions process: academic record, test scores, and extracurricular activities. In the US, it is possible that a student with perfect test scores, but not much else, might not be accepted at Yale or the University of Washington. Why? Because colleges are interested in putting together a strong class of students that represent a\u00a0variety of interests and backgrounds. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Colleges look to\u00a0create a happy and engaged student community in and out of the classroom. Exposure to a diversity of experience and opinion helps students think deeply, learn more,\u00a0and develop leadership skills, including collaboration skills. These are the skills for a\u00a0globalized workplace. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">How do college admissions officers learn about\u00a0students&#8217; lives and whether\u00a0they are a\u00a0good fit for the\u00a0college? They look at a\u00a0student&#8217;s whole history\u2014grades, classes, tests, and extracurricular activities at or after school over the four years of high school. The student essay, teacher recommendations, counselor&#8217;s report, and college interview complete a\u00a0student&#8217;s application.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">You can discover\u00a0more about the college search process and other college details in other <em>Spotlight<\/em> issues.
